Digestive system Flashcards
What is the role of the digestive system?
the role of the digestive system is to break food down to molecules which can be absorbed into blood
What is physical digestion?
To physically digest something means to physically break food down into smaller pieces
What is an example of a physical digestion
biting and chewing
What is chemical digestion?
is when enzymes and acids break food particles all the way down into nutrient molecules so they can be absorbed into the blood stream
where does chemical digestion happen?
Chemical digestion occurs int he stomach and small intestines
What are the three main types of nutrient molecules?
Carbohydrates, Protein and fats
What does mastication do?
It increases the surface area/ volume ratio of the food as well as making it easier to swallow
What does saliva contain
Saliva contains a chemical enzyme called amylase
What is the role of saliva?
Saliva moistens the food- making it easier to swallow
What are the teeth used for?
Used to bite and chew your food to break it down into smaller pieces
Salivary glands
Make about 1.5 liters of saliva each day
Epiglottis
A flap of tissue closes off your trachea (windpipe) so that food doesn’t go down to your lungs and causes you to choke
Tongue
involved in rolling food into a round ball (bolus) that is than pushed to the back of your mouth to be swallowed
Oesophagus
it carries the food to the stomach
Gall bladder
bile made in the liver is stored here
