Respiratory System Flashcards
What is respiration?
Respiration is a series of chemical reactions that cells perform in order to produce energy from nutrients (food).
What is breathing
Breathing is the physical act of moving air into and out of our bodies, by inflating and deflating our lungs.
What is the function of the nasal cavity?
The nasal cavity allows air to flow in
How is the air filtered in your nose?
it is filtered using fine hairs called cilia which removes any harmful particles
What is the main function of the pharynx
This is the soft part at the top of the throat that connects the mouth and nose to the oesophagus (carries food to the stomach).
What is the main function of the larynx and what does it contain?
This is the hollow muscular organ forming an air passage to the lungs. It contains our vocal cords, which we can vibrate as air passes them, allowing us to speak.
What is the main function of the larynx and what does it contain
The larynx flows in to the trachea or “windpipe”. The trachea is a tube that carries air to the lungs. It is strengthened by rings made of cartilage, so that it doesn’t collapse.
What occurs in the aveoli?
is where gas is echanges
What is a bronchi
Bronchi are the main passageway into the lungs. There is a right and left bronchi.
What is a rib cage?
The ribcage functions in protecting the vital organs and blood vessels. It expands and contracts along with the lungs to allow for efficient breathing.
What is a diaphragm?
The muscle that separates the chest cavity from the abdomen. The diaphragm is the main muscle of respiration. Contraction of the diaphragm muscle expands the lungs during inhalation when one is breathing air in.
