The Steel Story Flashcards
How can you calculate the cell potential?
(More positive - more negative)
Where In an electrochemical cell does oxidation happen?
The half cell with the most negative standard electrons potential
In terms of knowing standard electrode potentials, how do you know I’d the reaction could take place?
The standard electrode potential do what is being reduced is great than what is being oxidised.
What is a transition metal?
A metal that can form at least one stable ion
What is a complex ion?
A mental ion surrounded by coordinately bonded Ligands
What shape do 6 coordinate bonds mean?
Octahedral shape
What are the standard conditions that the standard electrode potential of a half cell is measured under?
Any solutions of 1.00 moldm-3
Temperate must Be 298K
Pressure at 100 kPa
What are 3 ways to prevent rusting?
Painting/ coating with a polymer
Oiling/ Greasing
Sacrificial method
What is the sacrificial method?
Placing a more reactive metal with iron. The water and oxygen react with the sacrificial metal instead of the iron.
What’s different from Chromium and copper and the other transition metals?
There’s only 1 electron in the 4s orbital
When the ions in a transition metal are positive, which electrons are removed first?
S electrons are removed first then the D electrons
Where in a water droplet does the concentration of dissolved oxygen is higher?
The edge of the water droplet
What happens at the edge of the water droplet?
The oxygen is reduced to hydroxide ions
Where do the electrons flow when a water droplet touches a metal?
The electrons released flow in the metal surface to the edge of the droplet
