September 1793 convention declared that it must destroy its enemies
Following the law of suspects (17 september 1793) there was a rapid increase in the number of those brought before the revolutionary tribunal

The show trials

A

San culottes desire for blood had been raised by execution if the king
In response to the sans colours a series of show trial took place in formars for october
First was marie antoinette who was guillotined on 16 october with her changes being orgies, sharing intelligence with the enemies and incest with her son
24th october trail of 21 expelled girondin leaders began
All guillotined in the space of 36 minutes on 31 october
6 november duc d’Orleans executed for his son’s friendship with dumouriez

October paris commune made dechristianisation an official policy
Religious statues, crosses and other religious ornaments were removed
Replaced with busts of arts
Church property were stolen to be used in mock ceremonies or melted down to make weapons
Notre dame cathedral was turned into the temple of reason and the festival of realism in november was held here

Festival was not authorised by the convention who refused to visit it
Convention did adopt the revolutionary calendar to help encourage sentiments
Robespiiere was fearful of such execres and belief that faith was vital to maintain order and control
By the decree on the liberty of cults religious tolerance was reaffirmed
Too late to save the 20,000 priest who had to renounce their positions
