jacobin reaction to food riots

A

Robespierre initially showed little sympathy for food riots
But realised the political advantage of supporting the sans culottes against grain hoarders and discretion girondin rivals
Marat in his articles blames the girondins (bourgeois businessmen) for frances problems
Produced attacks on gordon printing presses on 9- 10th march

Marats arrest

A

12th april 1793 girondins produced an indictment for marat’s arrest on the grounds of inciting murder, pillage and attacking the authority of the convention
Broke the principle that member of the convention were immune from prosecution because of their political views
Marmat tried before the revolutionary tribunal & acquitted 12 days later
Danton used this to portray the girondins as enemies of liberty

3 may, 8,000 san culotte surround the convention demand price control on bread
Robepierrre wins a vote to establish the first price control on wheat and flour
Girondins argued that food supplies would soon increase and price would fall but alliance between the jacobins and sans culottes confirmed

girondin deputies expelled

A

26 may robespierre calls a rising against the corrupt deputies in the convention
31 may - 2 june 1000s of sans codes supported by the armed national guards besieged the convention demanding the girondins be expelled
Initially some of the plains tried to resist
But on 2 june a crowd of 100,000 assembled around the convection and they gave in
Those who tried to leave were stopped from doing so until they had given their support to robespierre nation that 29 girondin deputies be expelled from the convention
75 deputies abstained but this just brought suspicion upon themselves
