What is repartemento?
Means separation a system of forced labor, groups of Native Americans would send young males to St. Augustine to work for the Spanish
- disease is spread through this system
-there was a demographic and balance among the Native Americans
Cause resentment between the Spanish and the Native Americans
What is the Columbian exchange?
It was the global exchange between the Americas Europe and Africa
For example Europe and West Africa brought many diseases over to the Americas like smallpox the flu, typhus, measles, malaria, diphtheria and whooping cough
The Americas exchanged agriculture like pumpkins turkeys squash
Why did the Spanish begin to retreat?
Mission system begins to decline in the 1650s to 1660s
They were largely gone by the 1680s
because diseases killing off the people that they are trying to convert, the English to the north are making their own alliances with Indians
the Indians were rating the Spanish missions
-The English eventually settle in Carolina, Charlestown is settled in 1670 and the English begin looking at the Georgia coast so the Spanish retreat south to Florida
