What was Andersonville prison?
Fort Sumter it was a POW camp during the Civil War built for 10,000 men and held at least 30,000 at one point

The battle of Chickamauga
Summer of 1863 part of the union effort to capture Chattanooga important because of the railroad and supply drop off-
-although the Confederacy technically wins the battle because the Confederates left Chattanooga unattended the union was able to take over Chattanooga

At this point the union was winning 1864 is important because the presidential election the south wanted to win because they thought they could get better terms under a different president
-The north wanted to win the Atlanta campaign quickly so they could have a decisive victory for Lincoln

June 22, 1864 Sherman decides to mount a full attack he loses the battle at Kennesaw

The Atlanta campaign a small small fights and out flanking until they get to Atlanta by August Sherman had Atlanta completely surrounded
- Atlanta is evacuated on September 1 or 2 September Sherman enters Atlanta Sherman stays in Atlanta for a couple of months while he is deciding what to do next
- Lincoln didn’t want Sherman to rampage through the countryside of Georgia before the election because he wanted to still look good to southern voters
