The Solar System, Forces Flashcards
What is a Terrestrial planet and give examples?
These planets are made of rocky material, the surface is solid, They don’t have rings, very few moons and are relatively small. In our solar system mercury, venus, earth, and mars are all terrestrial planets.
What is a Gaseous planet and give examples?
These planets have multiple moons, are immense in size, they have no solid surface and support ring systems. Gaseous planets in our solar system are Jupiter and Saturn which are gas giants with Uranus and Neptune as ice giants.
What is a solar eclipse and what is a lunar eclipse?
A solar eclipse is when the moon aligns perfectly with the sun’s rays to cast a shadow on the land. A lunar eclipse is when the sun, earth then moon are in perfect alignment for the moon to be cast into a shadow making it turn red.
What are the three forces?
push, pull and twist
What can force cause objects to do?
- Change speed (faster or slower)
- Change direction
- Change of shape
- Start or stop motion
- Move an object
What is mechanical force?
This can be any driving force, it may be a push or pull, but it could be an engine which forces an object forward.
What is a surface tension force?
This force is required to raise an object through a fluid.
What is air resistance force?
It can slow objects down when they are moving against it. Or if harnessed can be used to move an object along.
What is friction force?
This force acts on objects when they are in contact with a surface, such as the ground. It can be reduced by ensuring both surfaces are smooth.
What is gravity force?
This force affects everything on earth. It is a force which pulls everything to the centre of the earth.
What is buoyance force?
This is an inward force which acts in water or a object against gravity and is why certain objects float.
What is the penumbra?
The area when a solar eclipse is happening that is around the area of the main place.
What is the umbra?
The main place where the lunar eclipse is happening.
