Scientific Method Flashcards
What is an experiment?
A test on a small part of the world around us.
What is a observations?
What is seen heard smelt felt and tasted.
Give me a quantitative observation.
The sky is a yellowie, blue today
Give me a qualitative observation.
I woke up at 6:45 today
What is an inference?
A logical explanation based on your observations.
Tool and unit to measure Mass
A beam balance.
g (grams) and kg (kilo grams)
Tool and unit to measure time.
Stopwatch
s (seconds)
Tool and unit to measure volume.
Measuring cylinder
ml (millileters) and/or L (liters)
Tool and unit to measure temprature.
Themoniter
°C (degrees celcius)
Tool and unit to measure length.
Ruler
M (meters) ,mm….ect
What is a meniscas?

How can you stop parralax error?
By putting your measuring cylinder on a flat surface and look at it eye level.
How can you record measurments wrongly?
- Not writing down the measurments as soon as you know them.
- Using factors (not decimals)
- Not making sure everyone in the group has a copy.
What is analysing?
Looking for patterns and trends in a experiment.
What is primary data?
You collected it yourself.
What is secondary data?
Data that is from another source.
Why would you use seconday data?
- Dangerous
- No acces to equipment
- Too expensive
- For comparison to your data
- Location
- Too hard to conduct
What is a anatomy?
A data point that does not fit a trend (ignore it).
What are mistakes?
These happen when you do not take enough care. These are sometimes known as human errors.
What are errors?
These are small and uncontrollable variations that occure naturally in experiments.
What are some mistakes?
- Spilling material
- Using the wrong equipment
- Inncorrectly writing the measurment down
- Parralax error
What are some errors?
- Reading error
- Instrument error
- Human reflex
- Zero error
What is an aim in an experiment?
to determine…..
to measure……..
to find out……….
What does CMS stand for?
C: Changed
M: Measured
S: same
What is a independent variable?
What you changed in a experiment.
What is a dependent variable?
What you measure
What is a controlled variable?
