The Solar System Flashcards
Name the planets in order
Mercury
Venus
Earth
Mars
Jupiter
Saturn
Uranus
Neptune
What do all the planets in our solar system orbit
The sun
How does day and night happen
The earth rotates on its axis, the half of the earth’s surface, facing towards the sun experiences daylight and the half facing away, night
How does the earth rotate
Standing at the North Pole, the earth rotates anti-clockwise
What direction does the sun rise and set
It rises in the east and sets in the west
How does summer happen
In the summer months, the northern hemisphere is tilted towards the sun and it means the sun rays are more concentrated so the temperature is higher
How does winter happen
During the UK winter months, the northern hemisphere is tilted away from the sun. It means that the sun’s rays are less concentrated so the temperature is lower.
What seasons is the earth tilted towards nor away from the sun
Autumn and spring
What energy does the sun provide
Light and heat
What’s the name of our galaxy
The milky way
Why do planets orbit the sun
Because of gravity
Why do u see planets if they’re non-luminous
They reflect light just like the moon as well
What are asteroids and what do they orbit
They’re basically rock and metal debris. They orbit the sun between mars and Jupiter
What are meteors
They’re fragments of asteroids and comets which have entered the earth’s atmosphere and burn up
What’s another name for meteors
Shooting stars
