What are the social classes
The top includes upper classes,middle classes,working class and underclass
Jobs that are in upper classes
There money is often inherited or ‘old money’,privately educated,cultured and connected
Jobs that are in middle classes
Jobs include doctors, lawyers, business owners, professors – educated and connected within their own fields
Jobs that are in lower classes
Traditionally manual labour, tradesmen, unskilled and semi- skilled labourers
Jobs that are underclass
Unemployed or unskilled workers with little job security
What are these definition (traditional and contemporary)?
The traditional definitions used by many sociologists. In the post-modern era, class is far more diverse and has been categorised into seven rather than four classes
What are the new classes?
The elite,established middle class,technical middle class,new affluent workers,traditional working class,emergent service worker and precariat
What are the elites?
The elites are the wealthiest and the most privileged group
What are the established middle class
Established middle class are traditional professions, culturally and socially connected
What are the technical middle class?
Technical middle class are the science and technology graduates – middle class backgrounds
What are the new affluent workers?
New affluent workings are economically secure, mostly working class backgrounds
What are traditional working class?
Own houses, traditional working class jobs
What are the emergent service workers?
Young, culturally aware but financially insecure
What are the precariat?
Poorest in society, mix in own group, rent home
What are the classes
The more contemporary description of the classes. Beneath the established middle class there is limited social mobility. Outside of the established middle classes and the elites, it is the emergent service workers with the greatest educational outcomes, reflecting the stagnation of social mobility in contemporary society
