What are norms?
Norms are the expected social behaviour in a specific social setting
Meaning norm
Norms are social constructions and can rely on certain factors such as age time gender or location
What are values?
Values are what people in society believe to be adhering to
Examples of values
These include children being protected ,hard work being rewarded and education being the reward to success
Do all people agree on norms and values
Not all people agree on norms and values
What do functionalists believe?
They believe we should be socialised into a value consensus (all group members can take part in the decision)
What do Marxists believe?
Marxists believe the ruling class should impose these rules on the working class
What do feminists believe
Feminists believe that the norms and values are patriarchal ie they serve the needs of men
Definition of culture
Culture is a term that is used to define the way of life or group that have a common identity
Factors of aspects of culture
Religion,clothing,music,arts,shared history,language,accent,dialect
Sociological approaches
Individuals are socialised into societies and norms and values by social institutions
Social interaction that shape behaviour
These include family ,education ,religion,law,work,health,media
What is socialisation
Socialisation is the process through which individuals learn the norms and values of society
What is primary socialisation
Primary socialisation is usually conducted by the
family and involves the
teaching of particularistic
norms and values - i.e.
specific to family unit
What is secondary socialisation
socialisation is
performed by other agencies
of socialisation - e.g. media,
religion and education.
These teach individuals the
universal norms and values
of the society in which they
live
