The Small Intestine Flashcards
What is the name of the 3 parts of the small intestine?
Duodenum, Jejnum and Ileum
What does the duodenum do?
Digestion using pancreatic enzymes
What does the Jejunum do?
Absorption (vili)
What does the Ileum do?
Further absorption (including B12 vitamins and fats) also has vili
What does the vili do?
It allows the body to absorb nutrients from the food into the blood
Where are the 3 main enzymes made?
The pancreas
What are the adaptions of villi?
Villi have a wall only one cell thick so the nutrients only have a short distance to diffuse into the blood. Villi have capillaries inside them for a good blood supply to allow for quick diffusion into the blood. Villi have a large surface area to allow quicker diffusion.
