What is the middle passage in the slave trade?
The journey from Africa to America. This is where slaves were most commonly traded.
What did the Europeans give the Africans in return of slaves?
Manufactured goods such as guns, pots, pans and cloth.
What ways did people buy slaves?
You could buy a slave from a slave auction or a slave scramble.
What were slaves seen as?
Items which were inferior to the whites.
How was life like on the ships?
Living conditions were terrible. Many were shackled together and had to see people die around them. They weren’t given ordinary rights.
Why was the voyage so horiffic?
As slaves were treated like items, they wouldn’t be treated like normal humans. They were forced to live painful lives.
How were slaves placed in the ships?
They were forced to cramp together like objects. There was no personal space on the ship besides the deck which was reserved for whites.
Why would nobody help the slaves?
Black people were seen as inferior. Slaves being shipped around the world was becoming very common.
What would you get in return from selling the slaves?
Goods like tobacco, corton, sugar and run. Other places in the world didn’t have these items.
Why was the slave scramble so chaotic?
Because people would be fighting for the best slaves (the ones who look the healthiest).
