Geography - Cold Environments Flashcards
What is a cold environment?
Land that is permanently covered in a layer of ice. Temperatures are often below freezing.
What’s a glacier?
A very large mass of ice which moves down land (for example: a valley).
What is the accumulation zone and where is it located?
The accumulation zone is in the upper part of the glacier and is where there is more input than output.
What is the ablation zone and where is it located?
It is the lower part of a glacier and is where there is more output than input.
Name 2 inputs of a glacier.
Rocks from nearby mountains
Precipitation (e.g snow)
Avalanches
Name 2 outputs of a glacier.
Meltwater
Rocks being washed out.
What are processes that occur in a glacier?
Freeze-thaw weathering
Rotational slip
Abrasion
Plucking
What is a glacial period?
A period of time where temperature in an area drops significantly.
Name 3 factors that could lead to a cold environment.
High altitudes
Continentality
Latitudes
What does it mean if a glacier retreats?
It means that there is more output in the glacier compared to input. The front of the glacier will move back as it turns into meltwater. Glaciers retreating usually occurs in summer where there is warmer temperatures.
