The Skull And Vertebrae Flashcards
The calvarium contains?
- frontal bone
- parietal bones (2)
- temporal bones
- occipital bone
- sphenoid
- ethmoid
Parietal
There are two of these. The walls of the skull
Suture
Joints between calvarium bones
Coronal suture
Connects the frontal bone and the parietals.
(Mid) Sagittal suture
Connects parietals
Lambdoidal suture
Connects parietals and occipital
Temporal bone. What are the 4 parts and explain them.
Squamous- thin and flat
Mastoid- (breast) sinus connects to middle ear. Connects with nasal pharynx.
Zygomatic process- posterior part of cheek
Petrous- houses inner ear
Occipital bone
Posterior part of floor. Houses foremen magnum. Articulates with 1st cervical vertebrae (atlas)
Sphenoid
Keystone of the floor. Sphenoid sinus. Forms lateral wall of the orbit. Called Turkish saddle because of the 4 Clinoid processes. Pituitary gland sits between the saddle.
Ethmoid
Cribriform plate ( square bone) where olfactory nerves pass through to the nose.
The skull is broken down into 2 sections. What are they?
Calvarium and facial bones
Maxilla in detail
Upper jaw (keystone of face)
- all facial bones touch it except mandible
- has a zygomatic process
- entering roof of mouth is formed by maxilla
Nasal bones. How many? Forms what?
(2) and forms bridge of nose
Lacrimal bones
What? How many?
Located on the medial portion of the orbit there are 2 of them.
Zygomatic bones
What? How many?
(2) middle aspect of cheek bone
