Functions of the Skin
Protection Regulating heat loss Excretion Protein Synthesis Cutaneous Sensory Receptors
Skin Colour- Melanin
Yellow to brown or black pigment
Protects against UV radiation damage
Skin Colour- Carotene
Orange-yellow pigment contained in carrots and other, deep yellow vegetables
Skin Colour- Hemoglobin
Crimson red pigment in RBCs
Burns
Tissue damage and tissue death
Caused by excessive heat, electricity, UV, chemicals (acids)
Problems
- dehydration and loss of electrolytes
- infection later
Degree Burns
First degree - Just epidermis
Second Degree - Reaching dermas
Third Degree - Hypodermous
Skin Cancer
Most are benign - some are malignant and spread to lymphatic tissue and potentially the rest of the body
Risk factors
- excessive exposure to UV light
- Some chemicals - benzene
