What kind of organ is the skin?
The skin is an excretory organ which means it removes waste such as water and salt
What is the skin made up of?
The epidermis(the outer layer) and the dermis(inner layer)
What is the epidermis?
The epidermis is the outer layer of our skin that we can see.The outer layer of it is made up of dead cells.The inner layer of the epidermis is called the malpighian layer. It protects us from the sun
What is the dermis made up of?
Sweat glands:remove water and salt from the blood.
Pours: where sweat escapes from the body.
Blood vessels: (veins and arteries) supply the skin with oxygen and nutrients.
Nerves: allow you to feel sensations ( heat/cold/pain)
Oil glands: produce oil to moisten the skin.
Hairs:keep the body warm.
Fat cells : insulate the body.
What are the functions of the skin?
~it’s an excretory organ(removes excess water and salt)
~ maintains body temperature (37*c)
~protection : protects against the sun,germs and lets us feel sensations.
~Produces vitamin D
List some guidelines for healthy skin
~Wash everyday ~ Eat a healthy diet ~ Avoid touching spots ~Avoid over-exposure to the sun ~Wash hands regularly ~Get enough sleep ~Cleanse,tone and moisturise the face ~Avoid drugs and alcohol
