The Skin Flashcards
What two layers does the skin consist of?
the outer epidermis and the inner dermis
What is beneath the two layers of outer epidermis and inner dermis?
the subcutaneous tissue (or adipose tissue), which contains fat-rich cells
List all 16 parts required to be labeled on a diagram of the vertical section (VS) of the skin
Epidermis: erector muscle, cornified layer, granular layer, Malpighian layer
Hair, sebaceous gland, sweat pore, sweat duct, capillary, sense receptor, sweat gland, hair follicle, nerve, adipose tissue, dermis
What is the epidermis?
it is the outer layer of the skin
In what layer of the skin are cells constantly dividing by mitosis? Why?
cells in the Malpighian layer are constantly diving by mitosis to produce new epidermis cells
What happens when the new cells produced in the malpighian layer are pushed out through the granular layer?
They produce a waterproof protein called keratin.
What does the build-up of keratin in the new malpighian layer cells cause/
It causes the cells to become hardened, or cornified.
What causes the cells in the cornified layer to die?
excess keratin, along with a lack of blood capillaries, causes the cells in the cornified layer to die as they reach the surface of the skin.
What part of the skin produces melanin?
specialised cells in the malpighian layer produce melanin
Describe the appearance of melanin
It is a brown or black pigment
What does melanin give colour to?
The colour of the skin, hair and the iris of the eye. Freckles and moles are areas where melanin is very concentrated
What does melanin protect the skin from?
It protects the skin against harmful effects of ultraviolet radiation.
What is the dermis?
It is the inner layer of skin, located just inside the epidermis
What does the dermis consist of?
connective tissue containing a strengthening protein called collagen, a variety of specialized structures such as sweat glands, hair follicles, sebaceous glands (which produce an oil called sebum), blood vessels and nerve receptors
What do sebaceous glands produce?
sebum
