Excretion in plants Flashcards
What is excretion?
Excretion is the elimination of metabolic waste from the body.
Do animals or plants have a greater need for excretion? Why?
Plants do not have as great a need for excretion as animals, because plants makes their own food. They also do not produce surplus amounts of food (reducing amounts of waste)
Where is plant waste stored in a plant?
Many plant waste products are stored in vacuoles in living plant cells and within dead cells (such as old xylem).
How are the stored waste products sometimes removed from plants?
Sometimes these stored waste products are removed when the plant loses its leaves, bark, petals, seeds and fruit.
What molecules do plants lose, esepcially during daylight?
oxygen and water vapour
How are most waste products lost in a plant?
through the stomata on the lower surface of the leaf, but also through lenticels on the stem.
What waste products do plants lose at night?
carbon dioxide
