The Skeleton Joints Flashcards
Ways to classify joints
Structional - based on intervening tissue
Functional - based on the range of motion
Synarthrosis
Fixed Joint - Functional
Amphiarthrosis
Slightly Moveable - Functional
Diathrosis
Freely Moveable - Functional
Fibrous
Held together with fibrous tissue
Suture- found in the skull
Syndesmosis- found between the tibia and the fibular
Gomphosis- found where teeth join to the bony socket
Cartilaginous
Held together with cartilage
Synovial
made with a joint capsule and cavity containing synovial fluid
Uniaxial
1 degree of freedom
Biaxial
2 degrees of freedom
Multiaxial
3 degrees of freedom
Gliding Joints
have flat or slightly curved surfaces and the surfaces slide across each other
Hinge Joints
give angle motion in a singular plane allowing for flexion and extension
Pivot Joints
this joint allows for rotation eg supination and pronation
Ellipsoid Joints
a oval articular face rests in a depression allowing for angular motion within two planes
Saddle Joint
two surfaces sit together like a rider in a saddle allows for circumduction but not rotation
