The Skeletal System: Bone Tissue Flashcards
Osteoprogenitor cells
Divide to produces osteoblasts; are stem cells
Osteoblast
Produce bone; build Ca++ crystals; no division
Osteocytes
Mature cells that maintain healthy bone; no division; no secret matrix
Osteoclast
Dissolve bones; dissolve Ca++ mineral salts (matrix contains abundant salt minerals)
Compact bone
Contains few spaces and is the strongest type of bone tissue. It provides protection and support. Each osteon consists of concentric bone lamellae arranged around an osteonic (haversian or central) canal.
Perforating canals
Blood vessels and nerves from the periosteum penetrate the compact bone through transverse perforating canals. The vessels and nerves of the canal connect with the medullary cavity, periosteum, and osteonic canals.
Concentric lamella
Rings of solid Ca++ salts arranged around one another
Lacunae (osteocytes)
Between the concentric bone lamellae are small spaces called bone lacunae. Inside each lacunae is an osteocyte.
Bone canaliculi
Contain extracellular fluid; transport nutrients and waste; spongy tissue - no osteons
Trabeculae
Irregular arrangement of thin bone plate
