The Skeletal System Flashcards
The skeleton has 5 main functions what are they
Support/Shape,Protection,Movement,Making Blood cells/platelets and mineral storage
The skeleton has what type of frame
Has a rigid bone frame
What does the skeleton support
The skeleton supports soft tissue like skin and muscle
Bones are very tough what do they protect
It protects vital organs like the brain, heart and lungs
What does protection allow you to do in terms of performance and give an example
It’s allows you to perform well without the fear of injury. For e.g. skull protects the brain so you can header a ball or taking punches in boxing without injury
In movement, what can the muscles do
Muscles can move bones at joints
There are different types of movement at various joints what are they important for
They are important in different sports
Some bones contain what
Some bones contain bone marrow
Why are red blood cells important for exercise
Red blood cells are important for exercise because they transport oxygen that muscles need to move
Athletes with more red blood cells perform better why is that
They perform better because more oxygen can be delivered to their muscles
What do bones store
Bones store minerals like calcium and phosphorus
When bones store minerals what do they help
They help with bone strength- unlikely to break a bone
What are mineral storage needed for
They are also needed for muscle contraction so the body can move
What do long bones do
Long bones are strong and used by muscles to assist movement
Give an example of a long bones
Humerus in the arm
What do short bones support
Short bones support the weight of the body
Give an example of short bones
Tarsals in the foot
What are irregular bones suited for
They are suited for protection and muscle attachment
Give an example of a irregular bones
Vertebrae of the spine
What do flat bones do
Flat bones protect internal organs. Their broad surface allows muscle attachments
Name 5 flat bones
Cranium,sternum,ribs,scapula,pelvis
Name two short bones
Carpals and Tarsals
Name 4 long bones
Clavicle,humerus,phalanges and metatarsals
What is a joint
Joints is any points where 2 or more bones meet
What are the 8 joint movements
Flexion Extension Adduction Abduction Rotation Circumdation Plantar flexion Dorsi flexion
What is flexion and give an example
Flexion is closing a joint example wrist movement during a basketball throw
What is extension and give an example
Extension is opening a joint example kicking a football
What is adduction and give an example
Adduction is moving towards an imaginary centre line example swinging a golf club
What is abduction and give an example
Abduction is moving away from the imaginary centre line example bringing back a tennis racket
What is rotation in p.e and give an example
Rotation is the clockwise and anti-clockwise movement example leg movement during a turnout in ballet
What is circumdation and give an example
Circumdation is the movement of a limb, hand or foot in a circular motion. Example bowling a cricket ball
What is plantar flexion and give an example
Plantar flexion is the extension at the ankle. Example would be pointing toes during gymnastics
What is dorsi flexion and give an example
Dorsi flexion is flexion at the ankle. Example would be lifting toes during gymnastics
What are the 4 joint type
Ball and socket
Pivot
Hinge
Condyloid
