The Skeletal System Flashcards
What is the scientific name for the skull?
The cranium.
Bonus fact:
In a baby the bones haven’t fused together so their skull is more soft.
What is the scientific name for the upper arm?
The humorous.
Bonus fact: The biceps are attached by tendons to the top pf the humorous and the triceps are attached to the bottom.
What attaches muscles to bones?
Tendons.
What connects bones in a joint?
Ligament.
Give the location of a ball and socket joint in the human body?
The hip or the shoulder.
What is the function of cartilage?
Cartilage is a layer on the bones that protects them. It also absorbs shock.
What are antagonistic muscles pairs?
They are pairs of muscles that work oppositely in order to bring about movement. An example of this are the triceps and biceps, which work oppositely to allow the lower arm to move.
What is the scientific name for your jaw bone?
The mandible.
What is the scientific name for your collar bone?
Clavicle.
What is the order of the Hierarchy of Organisms?
At the bottom is the organism, e.g. human, then the organ systems, e.g. the respiratory system, then the organs, e.g. the heart, the tissues, e.g. muscle tissue, and finally the cells, e.g. red blood cells.
Joint
Joints connect two or more bones. There are different types such as the hinge joint, and the ball and socket joint.
Bone
Bone is hard tissue that supports the body.
Muscle
A contractable bunch of Fibrous tissue which allows movement in body parts.
Synovial fluid
It lubricates the joint.
Bone marrow
Bone marrow is soft tissue inside our larger bones which is protected by the hard part of the bone which surrounds it.
