The Breathing System Flashcards
Rib cage
Protects the lungs
Heart
The heart pumps blood around your body, delivering oxygen to the tissues and removing carbon dioxide.
Lungs
Air goes in and out of them and the lungs exchange gasses.
Trachea
(The windpipe.) The air goes through the mouth and nose, through the trachea and to the two bronchi
Intercostal muscles
They allow the ribcage to change in volume so ventilation can happen.
Bronchus
This is the tube leading from the trachea to a lung
Alveoli
They are small air sacs at the end of the bronchioles, where gas exchange happens.
Bronchiole
They are small tubes inside the lungs leading from the bronchus to the alveoli.
Diaphragm
This works with the intercostal muscles to allow ventilation to happen.
Pleural membranes
These allow the lungs to move easily during ventilation.
Inhalation
The intercostal muscles contract, expanding the ribcage.
the diaphragm contracts, pulling downwards to increase the volume of the chest.
pressure inside the chest is lowered and air is sucked into the lungs.
Exhalation
The intercostal muscles relax, the ribcage drops inwards and downwards
the diaphragm relaxes, moving back upwards, decreasing the volume of the chest.
pressure inside the chest increases and air is forced out.
