Sound And Light Flashcards
Plane Mirrior
A plan mirror is a mirror that reflects light perfectly(specular reflection).
Refraction
Refraction is the bending of light waves as they slow down when they pass through a different medium.
Pitch
Pitch is how high or low a sound is. The higher the frequency, the higher the pitch.
Ultrasound
If a sound is considered ultrasound, it is inaudible to humans.
Audible range
If a sound is at an audible range, it can be heard by humans.
Wavelength
Wave is the distance from one part of a wave to the same part on another wave.
Peake/crest/trough
The peak/crest is the top of a transverse wave, whereas the trough is the bottom of a transverse.
Medium
A medium is a substance or material.
Echo
Echo is when sound reflects of a surface.
The speed of sound
The speed of sound in air is 340 metres per second. The speed of sound in water is 1,500 , metres per second and in iron it travels a at 5,120 metres per second. Sound travels faster in solids and liquids than it does in air. Sound travels in longitudinal waves.
Amplitude
The distance from the middle of the wave, to the top or the bottom. The higher the amplitude, the louder the sound.
Diffuse scattering
This is when light rays are shone onto a non-reflective surface and the light scatters when it hits the surface, rather than being reflected.
Specular reflection
Specular reflection is when light is reflected perfectly off of a surface.
The incident ray
This is the ray that is shone onto a surface.
Reflected ray
This is the ray that is reflected off of a surface after the incident ray has shone onto it.
The speed of light
The speed of light through air is 3 times 10 to the power of 8 metres per second. The speed of light through glass is 2 times 10 to the power of 8 metres per second. Light travels in transverse waves.
Concave lens
Concave lenses are used for people who are short sighted. This means that the light does not reach the retina. The concave lenses diverge the light so that they reach the retina.
Convex lens
Convexlenses are used for people who are long sighted. This means that the light goes past the retina. The convex lenses converge the light so that it doesn’t go past the retina
Wave
A reoccurring vibration that transports energy, light or sound.
The law of reflection
This is that the angle of incidence is equal to the angle of reflection.
Transverse waves
In transverse waves, the vibrations are at right angles to the direction of travel. Light travels in transverse waves.
Longitudinal waves
In longitudinal waves, the vibrations are along the same direction as the direction of travel. Sound travels in longitudinal waves.
Angle of Refraction
The angle of refraction is the angle that the light ray is at when it is bent as it travels through a different medium.
Vacuum
A vacuum is a place that has no particles or mediums.
Space is vacuum.
