The Skeletal System Flashcards
What is an Osteoclasts?
They absorb and remove bone allowing for the development of new bone and maintenance of bone strength
What is an Osteoblasts
It acts as the body’s construction worker and it maintains structure by layering down new bone where required
What is the job of an osteocytes
They communicate the stresses an stains of the body.
They lie in the body for a long time within the bone and communicates with the outside world
What are the 3 names of the ‘maintince’ bone cells
Osteocytes osteoblasts and osteoclasts
Ha is yellow marrow
Yellow marrow is mainly responsible for the production of fat cartalidge and bone
What are the characteristics of red marrow
Produces red blood cells and platelets
It is red in colour due to heamoglobin
What are the two types of bone marrow
Red marrow and yellow marrow
What is compact bone? And where can it be found?
It’s found on the layer of the bones as well as in the shaft of the long bones
What is spongey/ callous bone
Spongy bone is found at the expanded head of long bones
Canallous bone consists of a lattice of thin threads
What are the 3 bone tissues
Spongy
Cancellous
Compact
What is the structure of the bone?
Periosteum- tough fibrous sheath connecting the bone
Articulor cartalidge -
Epiphysis - the 2 end sections of bone
Diaphysis - main shaft of bone
Metaphysis- where the epiphysis joins the mature bone
Endostem - a layer of osteoblasts
Medullay cavity- the marrow cavity
Give an example of flat bone and a description
Pelvis,
These bones have a flat appearance and a large surface area
