The Skeletal System Flashcards
What 4 things does this system provide ?
Form, support, stability and movement
What is the system made up of ?
Bones, muscles, cartilage, tendons, ligaments and joints
How are bones formed ?
Ossification - process of laying down new bone material by cells called osteoblasts
Identify and explain with examples the two types of skeletons ?
Axial - provides support, protection and framework (posture).
Bones : skull, vertebral column, rib cage, sternum
Sport : boxing , rugby , football header
Appendicular - facilitates movement and allows for muscle attachment.
Bones : pelvic girdle, shoulder
Sport : running, throwing, kicking, bowling
What is cartilage ?
Strong, flexible connective tissue found in various parts of the body.
Provides support, reduces friction in joints and acts as a cushion to absorb shock.
What is the name of the cartilage found at the end ?
Hyaline cartilage
What bones articulate at the shoulder ?
Scapula and humorous
What bones articulate at the knee ?
Femur and tibia
What bones articulate at the hip ?
Pelvis and femur
What bones articulate at the ankle ?
Tibia, fibula and talus
What bones articulate at the elbow ?
Humorous, ulna and radius
What bones articulate at the wrist ?
Radius and carpals
What are the 5 types of bones ?
Long bone, short bone, flat bone, irregular bone and sesamoid bone
Provide the function and an example of a long bone ?
Support weight, provide strength and allows movement
Femur, humorous, tibia and ulna
Provide the function and example of a short bone ?
Provide stability, shock absorption and precise movement
Carpals and tarsals
Provide the function and example of a flat bone ?
Protection, muscle attachment and blood cell production
Sternum, skull and ribs
Provide the function and an example of an irregular bone ?
Protection, muscle attachment and provides support
Vertebrae, sacrum and coccyx
Provide the function and an example of a sesamoid bone ?
Reduce friction, improve leverage and shock absorption
Patella and thumb
