The Skeletal System Flashcards
Ossification
The process in which bones are formed
Remodelling
Bones are continuously being reshaped (Injury/growth)
Osteoclasts
Bone cells absorbs unnecessary calcium during growth. (Carry way)
Osteoblasts
Bring calcium to your bones (build)
-Responsibility for creating bone matter
Epiphyseal line
Where the end of each bone fuses with the main shaft
Epiphyseal Plates
Growing area at the end of bones which allow the bone to grow longer
Bone matrix
Part of the bone tissue that forms the mass of the bone
Bone remodelling cycle
Resorption, Reversal, Formation
Bone respiration
Osteoclasts remove a portion of the bone to be replaced later by osteoblasts
Bone Formation
Osteoblasts lay down collagen and mineral deposits over the area remodelled by osteoclasts
Arthritis
Bone ends rub together after cartilage wears down
Osteoporosis
Weakened bones through loss of calcium or lack of vitamin D
