What Act am i writing about?

(title, date)

A

1911 INSURANCE ACT – SICKNESS BENEFITS.

“Some historians argue that the 1911 Insurance act introduced by the liberal government was not effective at making a significant improvement to the lives of the sick during the time of 1906-1914. “

Counter Analysis

A
    1. Family of worker not included in medical or finantual support.
  • Worker could not opt out of compulsory payments.

” However, the act only insured the worker and did not provide any provision for the worker’s family meaning that only the worker would be entitled to free medical treatment and financial support. Workers were also not able to opt out of the compulsory payments meaning those who objected the payments still were required to pay weekly to the scheme, (QUOTE)the website “bbc.co.uk/bitesize” agrees with stating that “many objected to the compulsory payments they had to make - but they could not opt out”. “

Evaluation

A
  • Did provide some level of support.
  • Far superior to the previous poor act(Work houses, poor houses).
  • Was not adequate ti fully aid the unemployed.(Not cover all occupations, did not help the old or long time sick)
  • Did not last that long as the deppression made the sceme fail.

” In evaluation the 1911 insurance act did provide some level of support to the sick that was far superior to the prevose poor act, introduced the infamous poor houses and workhouses to Britain. However, this support was not adequate to fully aid for the unemployed, the scheme did not cover all occupations and failed to provide for the elderly or the long-term sick. Furthermore, the scheme would also later reduce the amount of contributions as the 1930s depression put pressure on the scheme which it failed to support. “

Analysis

A
  • Better than the poor law.
  • Did help some of the employed who were insured.
“This was a great leap from previous legislations, since the sick would receive some level financial support during the time of ill health which supported many of those who were insured by the 1911 insurance act, there by successfully providing support to some of the sick. “
