What is a context?
The environment where the communication takes place.
It is limited, because of the people and space.
Why do we have the 7 contexts?
Because it makes the communication field more understandable.
If you were to define intra personal, what would you say?
Communication with oneself. We imagine, perceive, daydream and solve problems. This is our inner voice.
We can boost self-esteem with a positive orientation about one self.
“I am Barack Obama” in a situation where you feel like empowering yourself.
If you were to define inter personal, what would you say?
Face to face communication, between 2 people. It can happen through media too, like texting. Often seen with friends and families.
If you were to define the small group, what would you say?
Often concerned with task groups. It is communication among 3 at least. It is about dynamic -> group roles.
If there are to many group members, in danger of cliques.
Cohesiveness and synergy.
The context is made where the individuals take on roles/positions in the group.
If you were to define the organizational communication context, what would you say?
This is communication within a large group of people -> groups of groups!
We distinguish our roles in hierarchy (manager, leader, sales clerk etc..)
If you were to define the public/rhetorical, what could you say?
From one person to a larger group (like lectures)
It has 3 goals; to inform, to entertain, to persuade..
If you were to define the mass/media, what would you say?
This is communication through channels of communication, where you can reach a larger audience as e.g. newspapers. The context include the audience AND the channel.
Mass communication changes quickly, because it is more difficult to control.
If you were to define the cultural communication context, what would you say?
This is communication between/among individuals who have different cultural backgrounds. This can also be co-cultural backgrounds (a culture within an existing culture)
We can be classified around various identities (race, sex, age etc)
