The Self and the Brain Flashcards
In the brain, what are the bulges of folds on the cortical surface called?
gyri
What are the two roles of the callosal connections?
- cooperation
- competition
The corpus callosum carries 2 types of connections between neutrons in the brain. What are they?
- Homotopic connections
- Heterotopic connections
Homotopic connections?
between spatially analogous locations across the hemispheres
Heterotopic connections?
connect cells from one area of one hemisphere to another area of the other hemisphere
Ipsilateral connections?
between neurons that link within the same hemisphere
What is the procedure for the Wada test?
- an angiogram is done to ensure no blockages in blood flow
- sodium amytal is applied to one hemisphere to put it to sleep
- doctors try to establish which aspects of speech, language and control are intact
- they can show a set of pictures and works to recognise and remember
- after it wears off, the doctors can test for the patients level of recall
What is a callosotomy?
Cutting the corpus callosum
Why is a collosotomy done ?
To stop massive seizures in epileptic patients
What is the hemifield experiment on split brain patients?
- What is presented to the left hemisphere (right eye) can be reported verbally
- What is presented to the right hemisphere can be shown and touched with the left hand
What is the block design task?
•the patient has to copy the spatial pattern
•when doing this with the left hand (right hemisphere) there is
No problem
•when doing it with the right hand (left hemisphere) the task is impossible
•shows that the right hemisphere is for the spatial information-processing capabilities
