What happened when Moroccan Rebels attacked the capital city of Fez?
In April 1911 the French government sent 20,000 troops to drive them out.
How did the Kaiser reply to the actions of the French?
He accused the French of invading Morocco and sent a German gunboat, the Panther, to the port of Agadir.
Why, did the Kaiser say, he sent the gunboat?
To protect German interests. It was known as ‘gunboat diplomacy’.
Why were Britain worried about the Panther?
The British had an important naval base nearby in Gibraltar. Also felt that Germany were determined to humiliate France.
What did Lloyd George make clear at this point?
Britain were prepared to fight on this issue and so he told the navy to make ready for war. Made more Dreadnoughts.
When did it seem like war was going to break out?
September - October 1911
What encouraged the Kaiser to give way?
Panic among international bankers.
Why was the Kaiser unlikely to back down again?
He had been again humiliated and he blamed it on Britain.
Why did the race to build more Dreadnought become frantic?
In Britain there was a growing feeling that war with Germany was coming.
Where was Germany given land?
Congo.
Why were Britain and France closer than ever?
The French Atlantic Fleet was now moved to the Mediterranean following an understanding with Britain that in a future war the French Navy would look after Britain’s interest while Britain would protect the English Channel and Atlantic Coast.
