How did the Kaiser test the Entente Cordial?
He visited Morocco in March 1905 and stated that Germany would stand by the Sultan should they want independence.
Why were France annoyed at the Kaiser.
They had assumed that France’s control over Morocco was a formality.
Why were Britain annoyed at the Kaiser?
They feared that if Germany had a port in Morocco it could easily turn into a full-blown naval port that would threaten Gibraltar.
What did Germany do in response to this?
They proposed a conference where the situation would be discussed.
Where was the conference to be held?
Algeciras in Spain.
When was the conference?
January - April 1906.
Why was the conference a fiasco for Germany?
Every country voted against him (except Austria-Hungary), even his closest ally Italy.
What did this crisis show?
It showed that the Entente Cordial was stronger than ever. It also showed that Germany was trying to expand her influence. Moreover the Kaiser wanted to test the alliances.
How did the Kaiser leave the conference feeling?
Humiliated and bitter - he may not back down again. But he knew that the Entente Cordial would come together against German threat.
