The Sea π Flashcards
What is a swash and backwash
When a wave breaks, the water that rushes up the beach is known as the swash. The water that returns back down the beach is known as backwash
Name 3 way waves can erode
Hydraulic action
Abrasion
Compressed air
What is hydraulic action
The power of water as it crashes against the coast
What is Abrasion
Waves pick up stones and throw them against the coast
What is compressed air
Air in rocks become trapped by the incoming waves the trapped air puts pressure on the rocks causing the air to expand on pressure to drop therefore making the rock to shatter
What is a sea cave
A sea cave is a tunnel at the base of a cliff
What is a blow hole
A blow hole is a passage that links the surface to the cliff top
What are sea arches
A sea arch is an arch shaped tunnel that stretches through a headland
What are sea stacks and stumps
A sea stack is a pillar of rock cut off from the cliff or headland and left standing on its own
What are Tombolas
A tombolo is a ridge of sand that connects the mainland to an island
What is a bay and headland
A bay is a wide curved opening in the coast and a headland is the area of land that juts out into the sea
What are gyrones
Grovnes are concrete or wooden walls or fences that are built out into the sea at right angles to the coast.
They reduce longshore drift by trapping the sediment carried by waves.
What are gabions
Gabions are steel wire cages filled with stones. They are then stacked on top of each other where they act like a sea wall.
They are used to slow down or prevent erosion by breaking the power of the waves.
What are sea walls
Sea walls are built to break the power of the incoming waves. They are curved at the top to push the waves back out to sea.
