The Science of Biology Flashcards
What is Science?
The body of knowledge that scientific studies have gathered over the years.
An organized way of gathering and analyzing evidence about the natural world.
What is the Goal of science?
Provide natural explanations for events in the natural world.
Aims to use those explanations to understand patterns in nature and to make useful prediction based on those patterns
What is on the scientific checklist?
Focuses on the natural world Aims to explain the natural world Uses testable ideas Relies on evidence Involves the scientific community Leads to ongoing research Benefits from scientific behavior
What is an Inference?
To make a logical interpretation based on information that is already known.
What is a Hypothesis?
A scientific explanation for a set of observations that can be tested in ways to support or reject it.
What are the factor of a Controlled Experiment?
Uses measurable variables: Temp, Height, Time, Nutrients in soil
One variables changes all others are kept constant
What is a Independent Variable?
The variable that is manipulated or purposefully changed
What is a Dependent Variable?
The variable that is observed and that changes in response to the Independent Variable
What is Data?
Gathered information from experiment observation
What is Quantitative Data and Qualitative Data?
Quantitative is measurable and can be counted: Plants the length the height the weight
Qualitative can’t be counted: Color, direction of growth, how it feels.
