Studying Life Flashcards
What is Biology?
The study of life
What are the 8 characteristics of living things?
Made up of units called cells Are based on a universal genetic code Obtain and use materials and energy Grow and Develop Reproduce Respond to their environment Maintain a stable internal environment Change over time
What is a Unicellular Organism?
Requires a Microscope to see
Does not contain a cell nuclei
Lacks organelles
Dependent upon itself for life
What is a Multicellular Organism?
The aggregation of cells Much more specialized Membrane Organelles plus a Nuclei Conduct more complex activity and functions Animal, Plant and Fungi
What is Metabolism?
The combination of chemical reactions where an organisms builds up or breaks down materials
What is Photosynthesis?
The use of light energy to make chemical energy in plants
What is Sexual Reproduction?
Cells from two parents unite to form the first cell of a new organism
What is Asexual Reproduction?
A single organism produces offspring identical to itself
What is Homeostasis?
Organisms need to keep their internal environment relatively stable even when external conditions change dramatically
What are the Units of Measurement?
Units of Length- Mass
Units of Mass- Grams
Units of Volume- Liters
Units of Temperature- Celsius
