The Nature of Matter-2 Flashcards
What are Atoms?
The basic unit of matter
Very small
Contain subatomic particles that are even smaller
What are Subatomic Particles? The 3 things they contain
Proton
Neutron
Electron
What are Protons and Neutrons?
PROTONS Have nearly the same charge Protons are positively charged particles NEUTRONS Have no charge Pro and Neu are bound together by strong forces to create the nucleus of the atom
What are Electrons?
Negatively charged particle
Only 1/1840 the mass of a Proton
Electrons are in constant motion
Attracted to positive protons but the energy of their motion keeps them outside the nucleus
What is the Charge of an Atom?
Have equal number protons (positively charged) as electrons (negatively charged) and therefore are electrically neutral
What are Elements?
A pure substance that consists entirely of on type of atom
Represented by one or two letter symbols
What is an Atomic Number?
The number of protons in the nucleus of an element
What are Isotopes?
Atoms of the same element that differ in the number of neutrons are known as isotopes
What are Radioactive Isotopes?
An isotope that has a unstable nuclei and will break down at a constant rate over time
What is the Purpose of Radioactive Isotopes?
Determine the age of the rocks
Detect and Treat Cancer
Kill Bacteria that causes food borne illnesses
Can be used as tracers to follow the movement of substances with organisms
What are Chemical Compounds?
A substance formed by the chemical combination of two or more elements in definite proportions
A chemical formula is used to show the composition of a compound
