He also removed religious teachings in schools and the leader of the Hungarian Catholic Church was imprisoned in 1949
What controlled the Hungarian economy and what did this mean ?
The Hungarian economy was controlled by Comecon And therefore the Soviet Union
- prevents Hungary from trading with Western Europe and receiving Marshal Aid
- like other satellite states Hungary had to trade on uneven terms with the USSR
- it meant economic growth was fairly impossible
What did Rakosi try and do to boost the economy of Hungary ?
- put forward a five year plan however this failed to bring any progress
- it was devoted to heavy industry and producing steel
- as a result living standards began to fall an in 1952 Hungary experienced its lowest agricultural output ever
Was Rakosi popular ?
No he became increasingly unpopular
When Stalin died in 1953 what happened to Rakosi ?
Malenkov replaces Rakosi with Imre Nagy
It shows soviet control in Hungary and during the next three years there was much change
