The Rock Cycle Flashcards
What starts the rock cycle?
Magma is the beginning of the rock cycle
How are igneous rocks formed?
Cooling of Magma
Processes associated with the rock cycle?
Magma cools and forms Igneous rocks. The Igneous rocks uplift to the surface and weather and erode causing sediments. Sediments are buried and lithification occur. With pressure and heating they become metamorphic.
What are the two types of Igneous rocks?
Mafic and Felsic
Chemical compositions of Mafic Igneous rocks?
High in iron, dark in colour, slow flow, fairly dense, related to oceanic crust
Chemical composition of Felsic rocks?
High in silica, pale in colour, high flow, related to continental crust
Define the properties and formation of Basalt
Mafic- fine grained
Define the properties and formation of Gabbro
Mafic- coarse grained
Define the properties and formation of Rhyolite
Felsic- fine grained
Define the properties and formation of Granite
Felsic- coarse grained
