Connectivity of the Earth system
Oceans, atmosphere, land, living systems and non-living components, are all interconnected
Social–ecological systems?
People depend on resources and services from ecosystems, which are affected by human activities
Corollary: land use should strive to
Be profitable (economic dimension)
Be socially acceptable (social)
Conserve, if not enhance natural resource base as well as other ecosystems affected by resource use (ecological/biophysical)
What do we use land in Australia for
Housing, Recreation, Mining, Forestry, Hunting, Grazing
What determines what we use land for?
Biophysical- climate, geology, vegetation, topography
Economic- supply and demand, costs of inputs and outputs, technological change
Historical- length of Aboriginal and European settlement
Social and cultural- traditions, beliefs, religion
Political and administrative- land tenure national security and defence
What is land tenure?
legal title to land- determine the tenure (title), status, rights and restrictions pertaining to the land
How does land title affect resource use
2 titles, freeholder or crown lease. Crown lease is controlled
What is the duty of care
to manage land sustainably; farmers may have to
control of pest animals and weeds
– avoiding erosion (e.g. minimum tillage, windbreaks)
– appropriate grazing management and stocking rates
– managing degraded and sensitive areas
– avoiding off-farm environmental and social impacts
