Water Flashcards
Water exists in three phases on the planet Earth
Ice
Gas
Liquid
Special properties of water
H2O Hydrogen bonding gives water a charge It is a very good solvent Carries nutrients, pollution and more It can have a high viscosity, making water flow as a mass and creates turbulence
What is stratification
Stratification separates warmer surface water from cooler,
denser, deeper water
What is the hydrological cycle
Water recycling system on Earth
Must be interpreted in terms of size of the compartments and the rates of exchange
4 main hydrological linkages
Lateral - catchment
Longitudinal- river to sea
Vertical up- air
Vertical down- groundwater
Longitudinal- river to sea linkage
Estuaries rely on rivers for the supply of nutrients to estuarine and marine ecosystems, clear pollutants and enable fish migration up and down-stream
What is a wetland
An area that holds water for all or part of the
time and when wet contains aquatic life
Wetland habitats (4)
Fringing zone
Littoral Zone
Euphotic zone- top of the water
Profundal Zone- bottom of the water
How is the littoral zone sampled
Sweep net
How is the Euphoric zone sampled
Plankton net
How is the Profundal zone sampled
Ekman grab
What are the linkages in wetlands
the wetland habitat biotic communities, and
ecological processes are linked. This is why plants and animals are used as an indicator of the ecosystems health
Habitats and the nutrient cycle
Changes in flow will change habitats and
ecological processes such as retention of organic
matter
