August 1775
King George III tells Parliament that the colonies are rebelling in order to establish a separate empire
October 1775
Prohibitory Act
December 1775–Ended all trade between the colonies and Britain. Made it lawful to attack and raid American ships.
Congress instructs the colonies (via resolution) to form new governments (and establishes what new precedent in the process?)
May 1776–In the preamble, the authors attack the king himself, not just his ministers or Parliament
Virginia resolution instructing delegates to promote independence
