Before Lexington/Concord... Flashcards
The Townsend Acts
1767–British minister who replaces Rockingham faces same budget issues…taxes England, then taxes articles that America gets from England i.e. glass, lead, paint, paper, silk and TEA, in order to pay for royal administration within the colonies. Townshend also replaced corrupt customs officials with new, hand-selected ones.

British counter-response to the colonial response to the Townshend Acts
- After conferring with the king, British Secretary of State Lord Hillsborough instructs the governor of Massachusetts to dissolve the Massachusetts assembly unless the circular letter written by Sam Adams is rescinded. He also sends letters to the other colonies, threatening to dissolve their legislatures unless they ignore said letter (1768). Parliament then suggests that the ring-leaders of the letter be tried for treason on British soil.
- Hillsborough then tells General Gage, in New York at the time, to ready his troops in case they are needed in Boston.
Repeal of the Townsend Acts
1770 (However, the tax on tea remained.)

June 1754
•Governors of New York and Massachusetts asked the British Lords of Trade to call for the June conference to negotiate with the Six Nations and discuss defense against the French (and other matters of colonial defense).
•Invitations went to nine colonies–Georgia and the Carolinas were excluded because they lay pretty much outside of the threat, and Virginia and New Jersey declined, citing expense.
