1767–British minister who replaces Rockingham faces same budget issues…taxes England, then taxes articles that America gets from England i.e. glass, lead, paint, paper, silk and TEA, in order to pay for royal administration within the colonies. Q

British counter-response to the colonial response to the Townshend Acts

A
  • After conferring with the king, British Secretary of State Lord Hillsborough instructs the governor of Massachusetts to dissolve the Massachusetts assembly unless the circular letter written by Sam Adams is rescinded. He also sends letters to the other colonies, threatening to dissolve their legislatures unless they ignore said letter (1768). Parliament then suggests that the ring-leaders of the letter be tried for treason on British soil.
  • Hillsborough then tells General Gage, in New York at the time, to ready his troops in case they are needed in Boston.
