The Returned (TV) Flashcards
What are the 5 genres??
- Mystery
- Thriller
- Supernatural
- Drama
- Zombie
Why does going against the zombie genre conventions engage the audience??
Much more philosophical component as the characters are coming face to face with their own perception of trauma
Why are there economic benefits of the way The Returned used the zombie genre??
No extra makeup, CGI, costumes or extras were needed
What’s the benefit of a pre-title sequence??
Lowers the risk of losing audience throughout a series by providing lots of info before an episode of a slower pace
What are the 2 significant types of shot used in the pre-title sequence??
Static shot -> Wihholds information from audience, making them bystanders
Establishing shot -> Camille & town both small and in the middle of nowhere so shown as isolated
Why is seeing Camille again so significant to Lena??
Her identity developed as a result of Camille’s death which is threatened with Camille’s return.
She’s suffering with survivor’s guilt
How is Representation (Stuart Hall) theory shown in the episode??
Lena is shown as a rebellious teenager which is a stereotype
What is the main binary opposition in The Returned??
Logic v Emotion
How does gender performativity (Butler) link with the logic v emotion??
It relies on the audience understanding and accepting mainstream gender performance that women are emotional and men are more logical
Why is Jerome mostly on the logical side of logic v emotion??
- Tries to find explanation for Camille
- Struggles to look at Camille (it would break the logic that she can’t exist)
- Uses scientific language to refer to Camille (‘Sudden resurrection’)
Extra fact:
To make him more realistic as a person, he ends up breaking and showing emotion but still turns away to do so which is a common action of men when showing emotion
How is Claire’s lack of emotion in the initial meeting with Camille shown??
Wide shot with Camille & Claire as far from one another as possible -> They have no relationship yet
How does it show Claire becoming emotional?
Breathing heavy with eerie music that sounds like a heartbeat
Why is Lena both emotional and logical??
To maintain the binary opposition -> Gives audiences reason to not know which side to be on
How is Julie important for representation??
Her character could have been male but was made a woman to be believed by audiences to have maternal instincts to be more emotional towards Viktor.
How is Simon shown to have no emotion??
Sees his own gravestone an his expression doesn’t have any emotion behind it. (This shot also uses the Kuleshov effect)
He visits the graveyard in the first place because he’s logical enough to know what’s going on.
What is the importance of the static shot when Julie is walking down the path??
Viktor can’t be seen until she walks out of frame which makes the audience question if she’s still being followed.
Why are Simon and Adele important to be binary oppositions??
Simon is logical and Adele is emotional so this creates conflict because Adele having emotions (like getting angry and getting scared) causes Simons to not get the answers he wants.
Why is Serge important for the genre??
Brings thriller/horror themes as well as reinforcing the stereotypical zombie. Gives audience something safe and expected with the genre.
What could be said about the editing of the fight scene between Lucy and Serge??
It’s quick paced to reflect how overwhelmed Lucy feels.
What is the main reason The Returned didn’t go global??
It wasn’t produced by a large, popular company like Netflix
