The Reticular Formation Flashcards
Where is the reticular formation found?
The brainstem
What is the function of the reticular formation?
Regulates the level of arousal and conscious awareness
What is arousal?
The emotional state associated with some kind of goal or avoidance of something noxious
What is consciousness?
Awareness of both the external world and internal states
Where does the reticular formation give outputs to?
Thalamus
Hypothalamus
Basal forebrain nuclei
What neurotransmitter is used to transmit from the reticular formation to the thalamus, hypothalamus and basal forebrain nucleus?
Acetylcholine
What neurotransmitter is used to transmit from the thalamus to the cortex?
Glutamate
What neurotransmitter is used to transmit from the hypothalamus to the cortex?
Histamine
What neurotransmitter is used to transmit from the basal forebrain nuclei to the cortex?
Acetylcholine
What frequency wavelength is awakeness on an EEG?
50Hz
What waves can be seen on an EEG when the eyes are closed?
Alpha waves
What waves can be seen on an EEG in stage 1 sleep?
Theta waves at 10Hz
What waves can be seen on an EEG in stage 2/3 sleep?
Theta waves with sleep spindles and k complexes
What is a sleep spindle?
Short period of high frequency waves
What is a k complex?
Large intermittent low frequency wave
What waves can be seen on an EEG in stage 4 sleep?
Delta waves at 1 Hz
Which 3 functions are lost in order to sleep?
Sight
Movement
Thoughts
What neurotransmitter is used to transmit information from the eye to the reticular formation?
Orexin
Where does information from the eye pass through before it reaches the reticular formation?
Hypothalamus
What is REM sleep?
Inhibition to the interneuron is lost so the thalamus is over-inhibited
Give 4 functions of sleep
Memory consolidation
Clearance of extracellular debris
Energy conservation
Bodily repair
What is insomnia?
Inability to sleep- excessive input to the reticular formation
What is narcolepsy?
Fall asleep inappropriately- orexin neurones lost
What is sleep apnoea?
Excess fat presses on the airway so people wake up suddenly through the night due to hypoxia.
