The Restless Earth Flashcards
Name the different types of plate margins and what direction the plates move in.
Destructive- Plates move towards each other.
Constructive- Plates move away from each other
Conservative- Plates moving sideways past each other.
What plate margins do fold mountains occur on?
Destructive
What do people use fold mountains for?
Farming, Hydro-electric power, Tourism, Mining, Forestry
Composite volcanoes
- Made up of ash and lava that has been erupted and cooled and hardened into layers.
- Thick lava which flows slowly.
Shield volcanoes
- Made up of only lava.
- Runny lava which flows quickly and spreads over a wide area which forms a low flat volcano.
Dome volcanoes
- Made up of lava only.
- Thick lava which flows slowly and hardens quickly forming a steep-sided volcano.
Ways earthquakes can be measured.
- The richter scale. This is when you measure the magnitude with a seismometer.
- The mercalli scale. This measures the effect of an earthquake. It is measured through eye witnesses observations.
What is the epicentre and focus of a earthquake?
The focus is the point in the earth where the earthquake starts. The epicentre is the point on Earth’s surface straight above the focus.
What is a tsunami?
A series of huge waves caused when big amounts of water gets displaced. Normally a powerful earthquake will cause this.
Case study for a tsunami.
The Indian Ocean in 2004. It was caused by a earthquake which measured 9.1 on the richter scale.
