Ice On The Land Flashcards
When was the last ice age and what was it called?
The pleistocene and it began 2.6 millions years ago
What is accumulation?
Its the input of snow and ice into the glacier
What is ablation?
The output of water from a glacier as the ice melts
What is the difference between accumulation and ablation called?
Glacial budget
Name a case study for a glacier.
The Rhone Glacier in the Swiss Alps which is about 7.8km long
What is the main cause of glacial retreat?
Global warming
What are the two glacial erosion process and what do they do?
Plucking-when meltwater at the base, back or sides of the glacier freezes onto the rock. As the glacier moves forward it pulls pieces of rock out.
Abrasion-bits of rock stuck in the ice grind against the rock bellow which wears it away.
Name the 7 landforms produced by glacial erosion.
Arete Corries Pyramidal peak Truncated spurs Ribbon lakes Hanging valleys Glacial troughs
What is the lateral moraine?
A long mound of material deposited where the side of the glacier was
What is the medial moraine?
A long mound of material deposited in the centre of a valley where 2 glaciers met
What is the terminal moraine?
Builds up at the snout of the glacier when it remains stationary.
What is the ground moraine?
A thin layer of material is deposited over a large area as a glacier melts
Name 4 impacts of glacial retreat.
- Ice will no longer be available for winter sports.
- Unreliable snow fall.
- There will be fewer tourists.
- That would then lead to higher unemployment in them areas.
