the respiratory system Flashcards
what is the respiratory system
is a system that allows the body to breath, bring oxygen to the blood and removing carbon dioxide.
5 main functions of the respiratory system
inhalation, transfers oxygen, removes carbon dioxide, exhalation, creates speech
what is inhalation
it brings air from the atmosphere into the lungs
the respiratory system transfers oxygen into what
into the blood
the respiratory system removes carbon dioxide from
the blood
exhalation
breathes out carbon dioxide from the body back to the environment
the respiratory system creates speech where the
air travels over the larynx (voice box)
3 parts of the respiratory system structure
the conducting zone, respiratory zone, the diaphragm
structures outside the lungs (4)
the nasal/oral cavity, pharynx, larynx, trachea
structures in the conducting zone
all of the structures that are outside of the lungs. they provide passageways for air to travel into and out of the lungs
Mouth/ nasle, pharynx, larynx, trachea
the respiratory zone
is made up of the respiratory bronchioles, alveolar ducts and alveoli.
Structures in side the lungs
bronchi (the trachea branches into 2 bronchi)
bronchioles and the terminal bronchioles
the conduction zone
conducts air breathed in that is filtered, warmed and moistened into the lungs
gaseous exchange when the alveoli are covered in tiny carpillaries
gases can pass through the thin walls of each alveolus and capillary and into the blood system
gases can also pass from…
the blood stream into the alveoli
