The Respiratory System Flashcards
What is the respiratory system made of?
The nose, nostril, pharynx, larynx, epiglottis, and the trachea. In the lungs there are the bronchi, bronchioles and alveoli. At the bottom of the lungs is the diaphragm. There is the intercostal between the middle of the rib cage.
What is the function of the nose?
The nose allows the air to flow in. The hairs in the nose kills bacteria. The hairs are called cilia.
What is the function of the pharynx?
The pharynx (AKA the throat) connects the nose and mouth to the oesophagus.
What is the function of the larynx?
The larynx (AKA the voice box) is after the pharynx. The larynx helps voice production, breathing and swallowing.
What is the function of the trachea?
The function of the trachea (AKA the windpipe) is a tube that carries air to the lungs. Cartilage is around it so it does not collapse.
What is the function of the diaphragm?
The diaphragm is a main muscle that allows you to breathe. When we inhale the diaphragm get pulled down and flattened. Our ribs get pulled outwards. Our lungs inflate. When we exhale we relax our diaphragm moves upwards and curves. Our ribs get pulled down and inwards our lungs deflate.
What is the function of the bronchi?
The function of the bronchi goes into each lung. It splits into two. Each bronchus goes into each lung.
What is the function of the bronchi splits?
The function of the bronchi splits (AKA bronchioles). The bronchioles carries oxygen to the alveoli.
What is the function of the alveoli?
The air sac or alveoli is where gas exchange occurs. Each alveolus is at the end of each bronchiole. Oxygen goes in and carbon dioxide comes out.
What is the function of the rib cage?
The function of the rib cage is to protect the lungs and blood vessels.
What is the chemical equation for respiration?
Glucose + oxygen → carbon dioxide + water + energy (ATP).
What do we inhale and exhale?
We inhale and exhale 78% of nitrogen, inhale 21% of oxygen and exhale 14% of oxygen. We also inhale 0.04% of carbon dioxide and exhale 4.4% of carbon dioxide.
